How to keep your screen awake — every method that actually works

Screens turn themselves off to save power and protect your privacy — but sometimes that's exactly what you don't want. Following a recipe, watching a long dashboard, reading sheet music, letting a download finish, keeping notes visible in a meeting: all of these get interrupted when your display sleeps or locks mid-task.

This guide covers every practical way to stop your screen from turning off, from one-click tools to permanent settings, so you can pick the right one for your situation.

The no-settings way: a browser wake lock

Every modern browser (Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox) supports the Screen Wake Lock API, which lets a web page politely ask your device not to sleep the display. That means a single web page can keep your screen awake with zero installation and zero changes to your system settings.

To use it: open embers.page, click the fire, and choose a duration — or "Until…" a specific clock time. The one rule is that the tab has to stay visible on screen; browsers release the lock for background tabs. When the timer ends, your normal sleep settings take over again, which is the big advantage over flipping settings to "Never" and forgetting to flip them back.

Mac: settings, caffeinate, and Amphetamine

System settings: open System Settings → Lock Screen, and set "Turn display off when inactive" to a longer interval or Never (the exact wording varies slightly between macOS versions, and there are separate options for battery and power adapter). Remember that leaving it on Never also stops your Mac locking itself — think twice on a work machine.

The terminal way: macOS ships with a command literally called caffeinate. Run caffeinate -d in Terminal to keep the display awake until you press Ctrl-C, or caffeinate -d -t 3600 to hold it for an hour. Zero installs, very scriptable.

An app: Amphetamine (free on the Mac App Store) lives in your menu bar and offers timed sessions, triggers, and schedules — the power-user option if you do this daily.

Windows: settings, PowerToys Awake, and presentation mode

System settings: Settings → System → Power & battery → Screen and sleep, then raise the "turn my screen off after" timers or set them to Never. As on Mac, "Never" is a global change you'll probably want to undo later.

PowerToys Awake: Microsoft's own PowerToys suite (free, from Microsoft) includes Awake, a tray tool that keeps the machine and display on indefinitely or for a set interval without touching your power plan. This is the best permanent utility on Windows.

Presentation mode: on many laptops, Windows Mobility Center (search for it in the Start menu) has a "Presentation settings" toggle that suspends sleep and notifications while you present.

iPhone & iPad: Auto-Lock

Go to Settings → Display & BrightnessAuto-Lock and choose a longer interval or Never. There's no built-in temporary version, so set a reminder to change it back — Never plus a pocket is how screens stay on all day. For a kid-proof or kiosk-style setup where one app stays open and awake, look at Guided Access under Accessibility settings. Or keep Safari open on embers.page — it works on iPhone as long as the page stays on screen.

Android: screen timeout and Stay Awake

Settings → DisplayScreen timeout controls how long the screen stays on (menu names vary a little by manufacturer). Developers get a bonus option: enabling Developer Options unlocks "Stay awake", which keeps the screen on whenever the phone is charging — handy for a desk phone or a dashboard tablet on a stand.

Linux: power settings and xset

On GNOME, Settings → Power → Screen Blank → Never; KDE has the equivalent under Energy Saving. From a terminal on X11, xset s off -dpms disables the screensaver and display power management for the session, and the popular Caffeine extension adds a quick toggle to the top bar.

Which method should you use?

The honest answer depends on how long and how often:

Whatever you pick, avoid leaving "Never sleep" set on a laptop you carry around: it drains the battery and, more importantly, means your machine never locks itself when you walk away.

Quick questions

Does keeping the screen awake drain the battery? Yes — the display is usually the single biggest power draw, so expect noticeably shorter battery life while it's forced on. Plug in for long sessions.

Is it safe to disable sleep permanently? It's fine for the hardware in the short term, but OLED screens can suffer burn-in from static images over long periods, and a machine that never locks is a machine anyone can walk up to. Temporary methods sidestep both problems.

What's the difference between sleep, screensaver, and lock? Sleep turns the display (or whole machine) off, a screensaver replaces your screen's content, and lock requires your password to get back in. All three are triggered by inactivity timers — the methods above pause those timers.
